LESSON 2: Attend the Class

If you decide that you need to obtain a license to carry in Texas, the next step is to find and attend a qualified instructor’s class. All instructors must have a valid Certificate of Eligibility from the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS). The class will consist of four to six hours of classroom instruction followed by a shooting test. During the class, the instructor will cover topics such as:

  • The use of deadly force and firearms safety
  • Non-violent dispute resolution
  • Storage of firearms 
  • Transportation of firearms 
  • State laws regarding handguns 
  • The use of restraint holsters and methods to ensure the secure carrying of openly carried handguns 
  • Applicable provisions of the Penal Code

At the end of the class, you will be given a written examination which you must pass to receive a certificate of training. Once you have completed the course, you will receive your certificate which is required for the application process.
